The term celebrity scientist may seem like an oxymoron to the common man (Yes, i know, cue the Homer Simpson phrase –“You’re an oxymoron!”) but here in Lindau for one week such celebrities appear en masse.

Each year at Lindau, Nobel laureates from alternating disciplines come together on the picturesque shores of lake Constance in Bavaria to share their knowledge, experience, motivations, and enthusiasm with young researchers from around the world. This year the meeting focuses on physics –the fundamental science. Laureates will speak on their work and other topical issues facing the field from climate change to the directions physics should move in over the coming years.

Yesterdays, almost regal, opening ceremony was followed by an excellent talk on the state of the world’s health and population –" A fact based world view" was presented by Hans Rosling details of which can be found at www.gapminder.org
