Whatever people think about the rapid pace of change in the past, the fundamental arrangement of materials on the planet has not altered. There are living things which we call life, and there are non-living things which we call rocks, tools, buildings and so on. As a result of our greater understanding of matter, this distinction is now becoming blurred and is likely to usher in a new materials age.

Mark Miodownik, from the Institute of Making, believes bionic people with synthetic organs, bones and even brains will be the norm. Just as we become more synthetic, so our man-made environment is changing to become more lifelike: living buildings, and objects that heal-themselves are on the horizon.

A spectrum opportunity awaits both consumers and the communications industry when the Irish analogue TV signals are switched off at the end of October 2012. The unused White Spaces that will surround the new digital signals of the Saorview system will be up for grabs.

But, who will use this spectrum? What will they use this new spectrum for? How will they access it?

Some of these questions have already been addressed by both industry and regulators in the USA and the UK where the digital TV switchover has already advanced. Suggested uses of this spectrum range from new WiFi-like devices for increased broadband connectivity, to machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, to new mobile network operator deployments.

What is Coder Dojo? We hacked together a cool hangout that puts the real power of the internet and technology in the hands of the Irish youth. The true power of the net comes from coding, designing and having fun. CoderDojo is a place where you can learn from others and share what you are doing! Each week we have a hands on session with technologies like HTML5, PHP or Python. For more details visit http://coderdojo.com/ or contact the Coder Dojo team at dublin@coderdojo.com.
