SEED Dating with NOBELini Project Scientists and Designers 19:11:09-18:30 - 21:30 WHAT IF...? What if you could use a lamb as a kidney dialysis machine? Or grow meat for your dinner in a laboratory without killing an animal? From satellite communications to time-travel and invisible materials, breakthroughs in science and technology have often been driven by the exploration of fictional scenarios. Inspired by Science Gallery's current exhibition, WHAT IF, we challenge participants to come up with their own WHAT IF ideas imagine a future society, complete with new products and services, new rules of social behaviour and new ethical dilemmas. How did physics become involved in the social and economic sciences? - Prof Peter Richmond 26:11:09-19:15 - 20:15 Outlining the development of physics concerned with forces and machines as captured in the clockwork universe of Newton, Gallileo and Kepler to the emergence of a new paradigm - the statistical universe of Boltzmann and Gibbs with its emphasis on states and their evolution. Prof Richmond will discuss how the move from this the treatment of people in the manner of atoms as proposed by Mandelbrot seems entirely logical. Some applications will be developed by way of illustration. In passing we shall begin to understand how wealth in societies is as it is and why stock markets can crash. |

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Workshop 06:12:09-12:30 - 14:00 The "Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef" is a worldwide project that marries mathematics, marine biology, handicraft, community art practice and environmental consciousness-raising. People all over the world - from London and New York to Capetown - are collectively crocheting coral reefs, a woolly testimony to the disappearing wonder of living reefs that are being devastated by global warming. At the workshop, participants will begin the process of making an "Irish Reef," to be exhibited alongside the international crochet reef collection at Science Gallery in Spring 2010. |
