Green Week - Nuclear Power: Facts and Fiction
BENE seeks a Better Environment with Nuclear Energy. They are entirely voluntary and are not aligned to any political party. Their primary objective is to bring balance to the Irish energy debate where nuclear power is concerned. The members of BENE come from various academic and technical backgrounds and collectively have practical experience in all aspects of the peaceful uses of nuclear power with the exception of decommissioning. They have a growing number of supporters who largely agree with their position on nuclear energy, many of whom have assisted on various issues.
The presentation, called Nuclear Power: Facts and Fiction, contains three parts of about 20 mins each and the most recent lecture also addresses what is known about the Fukushima situation in Japan.
First, Prof Ian McAuley outlines the radiological impact on Ireland of the Windscale fire (1957), the Sellafield discharges (1980’s), the Chernobyl accident (1986) and now on the developing situation at Fukushima, Japan. Some background information on radiation in Ireland is also presented.
Next, Denis Duff outlines many of the popular myths in circulation concerning nuclear power and puts forward the factual position on each of these myths.
Finally, Prof Philip Walton describes the types of reactor that would be suitable for Ireland and explains why they would be suitable.
