How many people does it take to power a light bulb?

Burn Calories Not Carbon will have Gavin Harte present the first talk at Science Gallery completely powered by humans. In association with the EPA, Gavin will present his unique talk on climate change and energy, but this time the audience power the show. A people-powered electricity station will be connected to bicycles and the audience will peddle to provide power for the talk, if the audience stops, so does the show.

The power to influence climate change is in your hands... and feet!<--break->

The story of climate change is directly connected to the amount of energy we use and nowadays we take that energy for granted. Teenagers in the 80's remember their parents cries of 'Did you turn off the lights?' ringing in their ears- are we doing the same now?

Did you know that a typical 30 minute cycle produces about 40 watt hours of energy. That's enough to run...

  • A CFL lightbulb for about 2 hours
  • 5 full mobile phone charges
  • About 1 hour on your laptop or half an hour on your desktop computer

In other words, every Irish person needs the equivalent physical effort of 50 people constantly cycling to produce enough energy to power their average day!

Understanding the link between our everyday energy use and climate change is critical if we are going to do anything about it. Gavin's live human energy presentation offers a mix of audience participation with the most up-to-date information and thinking on the climate change, the energy story and the part we play.
